Sleningford have confirmed that we can have access to the water through their venue. Please only book onto the event after communication with Aidan!

Please note that due to high or low water levels this session may be cancelled at the last minute. As much notice will be given as possible but due to sudden adverse changes in weather or river levels safety must be prioritised. Please only book onto this event if you are aware and ok with event cancellations on or part way through the day, even after travelling.

The session costs £15 for the full day which includes entry fee that is payable to Sleningford Watermill.

Numbers for this white water coaching session are limited and will be based on suitability. Please only book onto this session if you have spoken with Aidan regarding suitability for the session. If demand is high there may be separate morning and afternoon sessions.

This session is a basic to intermediate introduction to white water paddling. These sessions are for those who already paddle on flat water and want to try giving moving water a go.  You don't need a roll, just be able to control a kayak on the flat and want to try out moving water. This event may include some white water safety techniques including safe swimming and signals. If you book onto this event please be prepared to be submersed in moving water.

This is not a Paddle Sport UK official course. Courses such as Introduction to White Water Safety, White Water Safety and White Water Award can be found on the Paddles Up training website. If you want to further your learning after this session these courses would be the next step.

Location

We will be based at a static location on the River Ure throughout the whole day, it is approximately one hour and forty minutes away.

We will meet at Sleningford Watermill at 09:30. Access fees include parking, toilets and shower facilities.

Parking is included in your day ticket. Please car share if possible to reduce our impact on the environment.

You will need:

Paddling Equipment

  • Clothing appropriate for being submersed in moving water during early January! Ideally a dry suit. A wet suit and cag is suitable but you may be submersed in cold water.
  • Appropriate footwear. Wet suit shoes are not appropriate as they do not have enough grip, old trainers would be acceptable.
  • Whitewater Spec Kayak (please check if you are unsure)
  • Paddle
  • Spray deck
  • Buoyancy aid
  • Helmet

Other Items

  • Lunch
  • Snacks
  • Drinks (Hot and Cold)
  • Spare, warm, dry clothing!
  • Towel (Changing Robes are great!)

Optional Items

  • 15/20m throwline (probably best to try a few out before you buy)
  • Knife (required if you have a throwline, must be accessible one handed from your buoyancy aid)

Unfortunately, you will require to have your own equipment for this event. The club will not be providing equipment or transport of equipment.

A risk assessment for the event will be available from the ‘Governance’ tab under ‘Risk Assessments’.

Showers and toilets are included in the day ticket. We are not sure on the size of the changing facilities at the location or when they are open, so a changing robe might be a good idea!

Under 18’s must have a parent or appropriate adult for the duration of the session.

Children will only be released into the care of their responsible adult.

The Organising Committee of the White Water Coaching Session believe that the welfare and wellbeing of all children is paramount. All children, regardless of age, disability, gender, race, religion or belief, have equal rights to safety and protection. All suspicions, concerns and allegations of harm will be taken seriously and responded to swiftly and appropriately. A welfare officer for the event has been appointed and will act as the point of contact for any concerns or allegations.

Kind regards,

Aidan
